Examples of scams are giveaways, hustles involving new romance, phishing, extortion emails, fake company alerts, blackmail, "rug pulls," and may involve fake mining apps or networks. Initial Coin Offering (ICO) 'rug pull' scam - Similar to a pump and dump scam, in a rug pull crypto scam an ICO is hyped through marketing and social media.
In May, the project rug pulled after $1.35 million was pulled out, causing the token's value to drop by more than 96 percent. There are several common types of scam, including "pump and dump" schemes that involve artificially inflating the value of assets; fake verification ticks on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram; fake applications that pose as legitimate cryptocurrency trading platforms; and romance scams or "pig butchering" where trust is built over time to defraud victims.
